La iglesia / The Church: Santa María la Real de Sar

Nos casamos en la Colegiata Santa María la Mayor y Real de Sar (inglés). La hemos elegido porque es una de las iglesias más acogedoras y bonitas de Santiago.

Está muy cerca del centro histórico, en la calle de Sar.

We are getting married in the Church of Santa Maria Mayor and Real de Sar. We chose this church because it is the most romantic and beautiful church of Santiago. It is very close to the historic centre in the street of Sar.

Su historia se inicia en 1134. Conserva la mayor parte de su estructura románica original. Llama la atención por la inclinación de sus muros y pilares interiores, casi imperceptible en el exterior debido a los contrafuertes, añadidos en el s.XVIII.

The history of the church dates back to 1134. The majority of the church still has its original Roman structure. Your attention is drawn to the leaning of its walls and interior pillars , almost undistinguishable is the exterior support columns , added in the 18^th Century.

Ubicado a las orillas del río Sar, el edificio fue consagrado por Diego Gelmírez (inglés). Existen numerosas teorías que intentan explicar la razón por la cual se inclina su estructura. La más aceptada alude a la tipología del terreno. Se trata de un lugar pantanoso, cuya proximidad al río propició corrimientos de tierra, arrastrando su estructura. Otras corrientes defienden que esta singularidad se debe a defectos en la construcción de las bóvedas o incluso a que estaba ya contemplada en el proyecto de las obras.

Situated on the banks of the river SAR, the church was designed by Diego Gelmirez. There exists numerous theories for the inclination in the structure. The most obvious being the type of land structure. The reason being so close to the river which weakens the foundations , other currents actually defend the actual structure of the vaults which was planned in the overall work.

En su interior cuenta con tres naves. La capilla mayor es poligonal, mientras que las laterales son circulares. Las tres se cubren con bóveda de cañón. A la derecha de la puerta principal se encuentra la pila bautismal, importante resto arqueológico del siglo XII. La parte interna de la iglesia muestra numerosos motivos ornamentales propios del románico. No sucede lo mismo en su fachada, donde solo la parte baja presenta elementos románicos. La restante se reconstruyó en el siglo XVIII. 

The interior is made up of three sections. The Capilla is polygonal , with its cicular width. The three are covered by the vaults. On the right of the main door you will see the baptism font , an important archilogical piece from the 12^th Centuary. The internal part of the church exhibits numerous examples of the romanic period. The same cannot be said for the façade where there are only examples of the romantic period on the lower parts. The remainder of the construction dates form the 18^th Centuary.

Mediante la Sacristía puede accederse al claustro, único de estilo románico existente en la ciudad, del que sólo se conserva un tramo. Su autoría se le atribuye al MaestroMateo, autor del Pórtico dela Gloria (inglés) El restante pertenece a los siglos XVII y XVII. Permite la contemplación de importantes piezas arqueológicas y litúrgicas.
 

In the middle the Sacristy can be accessed by the cloister , unique in its romanic style existing in the city , only this part remains. The design is attributed to the Master Mathew , architect of the Portico dela Goloria ( The Glory Door ). The remainder dates from the 17^th Centuary.
