La boda ya ha comenzado

El sábado celebramos en Madrid la fiesta de despedida de soltera de Vicky, un tanto particular ya que al final asistió hasta el novio!

Para nosotros resultó entrañable haber reunido a nuestro grupo de amigos de Madrid y a los que os habéis desplazado desde otras ciudades e incluso países.

Muchas gracias a todos. Especialmente para Vicky fue una fiesta fantástica.

Carmen Rosa, Pilar, habéis dado en el clavo. Muy buen trabajo.

Comenzamos a subir fotos. Por el momento os dejamos dos del grupo, a la espera de que nos vayan llegando más.

To help with a selection process for a wedding present we have opened a Wedding List in the Spanish retailer El Corte Inglés. As many of you may not speak Spanish we have prepared a small tutorial to explain the webiste of El Corte Inglés and how to enter the wedding list.

This bring you to a page where you do not need to register so you push ACEPTAR on the right hand side.

El banquete: Casa Grande do Bachao / The Reception: Casa Grande do Bachao

La Casa Grande do Bachao es un establecimiento de turismo rural con más de 300 años de antigüedad. En el entorno rural gallego, "Casa Grande" eran las haciendas de los grandes terratenientes, en su mayor parte hidalgos o miembros del clero. La Casa Grande do Bachao, de hecho, está vinculada a la Iglesia de Santiago. Era de su propiedad y desde allí se cobraban los "impuestos" de la época.

Casa Grande do Bachao is a rural style hotel over 300 years old. This is a large Galicean style house. Bachao  was part of the Church of Santiago, it was the property where they collected local taxes.

Pero si hemos elegido Bachao no es sólo porque se trata de un establecimiento en un lugar espectacular... El propietario de Bachao es Javier, hermano de Vicky, que aquí os da la bienvenida y os presenta a Belén Seijas, la responsable del restaurante O Figón do Bachao.

We hope on the 29^th June you  will be able to enjoy Bachao in its full splendour. The house is surrounded by a large forest. The estate and land of Bachao has 14,000 Sq Metres , which includes 2 houses , 2 hórreos, a cross , a garden with various terraces and paths which makes its way to the river Tambre.

Está a 15 minutos en coche del centro de Santiago. Es sencillo llegar. Tendremos autobuses para el traslado pero si decides ir en tu propio vehículo cuando cruces la verja de la explotación forestal continúa sin temor durante algo más de un kilómetro. Al final aparecerá Bachao.

It takes only 15 minutes in a car to the centre of Santiago and is not difficult to get there. We will have coach buses organized to collect you from the church to bring you to Bachao after the wedding ceremony. If you have your own car once off the motorway you will continue down a forest road for a litter over one kilometer , at the end you can park your car in Bachao.

Misa con Ofrenda y Botafumeiro / Mass Offering in Cathedral and Botafumeiro

Para la tarde del viernes, 28 de junio, esperamos poder cumplir una de las tradiciones más entrañables de la ciudad, asistir a una Misa con Ofrenda en la Catedral, y presenciar el vuelo del Botafumeiro. Estamos organizándolo para las 19:30 h., pero os pedimos que estéis pendientes de este Blog, donde iremos confirmando todas las reservas y horarios.

La tradición viene desde el s.XVII. La Ofrenda al Apóstol Santiago se hace en nombre de Rey de España una vez al año, el día 25 de julio, Día de Santiago, desde que en 1643 Felipe IV nombró al apóstol como Patrón de España. En la Ofrenda, las personas o grupos que la realizan se dirigen al Apóstol Santiago desde las cercanías del altar, pidiéndole su protección como se hace desde la Batalla de Clavijo (mediados del s.IX).

Tras la Ofrenda, que leeremos nosotros, Vicky y Gearoid, todos tendréis oportunidad de ver "volar" el botafumeiro, un incensario gigante que se utilizaba desde la Edad Media, para purificar el aire de la Catedral, enrarecido por la presencia permanente de miles de peregrinos que dormían en ella tras su llegada a la ciudad.

El Botafumeiro es uno de los símbolos más conocidos de la ciudad y a su alrededor se han creado numerosas historias y leyendas. Tiene 1,5 m, de altura y pesa 53 Kg. En su vuelo recorre el crucero de la Catedral elevándose unos 21 m. de altura. Puede llegar hasta a los 70 km/h. Funciona en las misas solemnes. El sistema de poleas que lo levanta es manejado por los tiraboleiros, 8 personas, todos hombres, guiados por el tiraboleiro mayor.

On the evening of Friday 28th June , we hope to partake in one of the oldest traditions in the city , assisting in the Mass in the Cathederal and to be present for the swinging of the botafumeiro. We are organizing for 7,30pm , however we ask you to keep an eye on the Blog so as we can confirm all the reservations and times.

The tradition dates back to the 17th Centuary. The offering to the Apostle St.James is done in the name of the King of Spain once a year, on the 25^th July , Santiago Day ( which is also Gearoid Birthday ! ), since 1643 with Philipe IV naming the Apostel Patron Saint of Spain. In the Offering , the persons or groups making this offering will be seated close to the alter, asking for his protection as is custom since the Battle of Clavijo ( from the middle of the 9^th Centuary)

Through the Offering, both Vicky and Gearoid will be reading  , and all will have the opportunity to see ¨the swinging of the botafumeiro ¨ a giant insence which has been used since the Middle Ages , to purify the air in the Cathederal, from all the pilgrims who would travel to the city .

The Botafumeiro is one of the symbols most well known in the city and lends itself to lost of legends and history. It extends to 1.5 metres in height and weights 53kgs. In its swinging through the cloisters it reached 21 metres in height. It can travel at a speed of 70kms per hour. It is used in solemn masses. The swinging is carried out by a team of triaboleiros , 8 people all men and lead by the tirabolero mayo ( the head of the team )

El sábado día 29 por la mañana, a partir de las 12.00, podemos organizar visitas guiadas por las cubiertas de la Catedral de Santiago, para aquellos que os animéis.

Los grupos podemos organizarlos por idiomas (español, inglés).

La visita dura aproximadamente una hora. Se accede desde el Pazo de Xelmírez. Se recomienda calzado cómodo. Los niños pueden acceder pero siempre bajo la responsabilidad de sus padres. No se recomienda para niños que no caminen bien por sí mismos, o no se manejen bien ante rampas y escaleras. No es viable acceder con sillas infantiles.

Un guía de la Catedral recogerá al grupo y lo llevará a un recorrido por los techos y terrazas de la Catedral. Explicará la historia de la basílica y sus distintas fases de construcción; y tendremos la oportunidad de ver la ciudad de Santiago y sus alrededores desde arriba.

Los que estéis interesados en participar en esta visita avisad aquí mediante un comentario, indicando cuántas personas y el idioma preferido.

La fecha límite para reservar es el lunes 16 de junio.

On Saturday morning the 29^th . from 12am we are organizing a special guided visit to the roof of the Cathederal of Santiago de Compostela for those who would wish to visit

We can organize the visit in two languages ( Spanish and English )

The visit will take approximately 1 hour. We will meet at the Pazo de Xelmirez. We recommend comfortable shoes. Children can attend but only with supervision of their parents. We would not recommend for children who cannot walk independently or who are afraid of heights. Prams are not allowed.

A tour guide from the Cathedral  will collect the Group and take you to the roof and terraces of the Cathedral. Explaining the history of the basilica and its phases of construction and you will have the opportunity to see the city of Santiago from above.

For those who are interested in the visit we would ask you to advise us through a commentary in this Blog, indicating the number of people and language preferred.

The closing date for making a reservation will be Monday June 16^th.

No en vano se trata de una ciudad muy visitada por turistas de todas las nacionalidades, y centro también de grandes congresos y toda clase de eventos. Santiago has numerous options for sleeping. This is a city that is visited by many international tourists and as a centre for large conventions and all types of events. Depending on event scheduling the end of June is high season and you could encounter problems thus for this reason we highly recommend that you reserve your hotel as quickly as possible.

We are getting married in the Church of Santa Maria Mayor and Real de Sar. We chose this church because it is the most romantic and beautiful church of Santiago. It is very close to the historic centre in the street of Sar.

Su historia se inicia en 1134. Conserva la mayor parte de su estructura románica original. Llama la atención por la inclinación de sus muros y pilares interiores, casi imperceptible en el exterior debido a los contrafuertes, añadidos en el s.XVIII.

The history of the church dates back to 1134. The majority of the church still has its original Roman structure. Your attention is drawn to the leaning of its walls and interior pillars , almost undistinguishable is the exterior support columns , added in the 18^th Century.

Ubicado a las orillas del río Sar, el edificio fue consagrado por Diego Gelmírez (inglés). Existen numerosas teorías que intentan explicar la razón por la cual se inclina su estructura. La más aceptada alude a la tipología del terreno. Se trata de un lugar pantanoso, cuya proximidad al río propició corrimientos de tierra, arrastrando su estructura. Otras corrientes defienden que esta singularidad se debe a defectos en la construcción de las bóvedas o incluso a que estaba ya contemplada en el proyecto de las obras.

Situated on the banks of the river SAR, the church was designed by Diego Gelmirez. There exists numerous theories for the inclination in the structure. The most obvious being the type of land structure. The reason being so close to the river which weakens the foundations , other currents actually defend the actual structure of the vaults which was planned in the overall work.

En su interior cuenta con tres naves. La capilla mayor es poligonal, mientras que las laterales son circulares. Las tres se cubren con bóveda de cañón. A la derecha de la puerta principal se encuentra la pila bautismal, importante resto arqueológico del siglo XII. La parte interna de la iglesia muestra numerosos motivos ornamentales propios del románico. No sucede lo mismo en su fachada, donde solo la parte baja presenta elementos románicos. La restante se reconstruyó en el siglo XVIII. 

The interior is made up of three sections. The Capilla is polygonal , with its cicular width. The three are covered by the vaults. On the right of the main door you will see the baptism font , an important archilogical piece from the 12^th Centuary. The internal part of the church exhibits numerous examples of the romanic period. The same cannot be said for the façade where there are only examples of the romantic period on the lower parts. The remainder of the construction dates form the 18^th Centuary.

Mediante la Sacristía puede accederse al claustro, único de estilo románico existente en la ciudad, del que sólo se conserva un tramo. Su autoría se le atribuye al MaestroMateo, autor del Pórtico dela Gloria (inglés) El restante pertenece a los siglos XVII y XVII. Permite la contemplación de importantes piezas arqueológicas y litúrgicas.
 

In the middle the Sacristy can be accessed by the cloister , unique in its romanic style existing in the city , only this part remains. The design is attributed to the Master Mathew , architect of the Portico dela Goloria ( The Glory Door ). The remainder dates from the 17^th Centuary.
